Melaka, Malaysia – May 6, 2024 – The historic city of Melaka buzzed with excitement last Sunday as cyclists from across Asia and beyond converged for the first-ever L’Étape Melaka by Tour de France. This marked the third consecutive year that Malaysia hosted the prestigious event.
L’Étape by Tour de France, known as “the World’s Greatest Amateur Cycling Event,” offered riders a chance to challenge themselves and experience the thrill of the Tour de France. The scenic route, starting at The Sail Melaka, weaved through Melaka’s vibrant heritage, making the event more than just a race but a cultural adventure.

The inaugural L’Étape Melaka proved immensely popular, attracting over 3,350 participants, 90% of whom were international and domestic riders from 47 countries. This turnout reflects the growing love for cycling in Asia and fosters camaraderie among cyclists from diverse backgrounds.
Riders had the option of tackling either a 140km or 70km route, both designed and approved by Tour de France experts to cater to both seasoned cyclists and newcomers. The event’s sanctioning by the Malaysia National Cycling Federation further solidified its commitment to safety and excellence.

Melaka’s rich heritage provided the perfect backdrop for this immersive experience. As cyclists crossed the finish line, they celebrated not just their physical accomplishment but also the opportunity to soak in Melaka’s cultural treasures, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Adding to the festivities were numerous activities beyond the racecourse, including a lucky draw with prizes exceeding RM100,000, a Tour de France memorabilia display, and sponsor booths.
Riduwan Matni, Group CEO of Muse Group Asia, co-organizers of the event, expressed delight at bringing L’Étape by Tour de France to Melaka, especially during Visit Melaka Year 2024. He highlighted the enthusiasm from participants, which reflects the flourishing cycling scene in Asia, and promised to expand the event’s reach in the future.
A highlight of the event was the Specialized Elite Wave, featuring an exclusive podium ceremony for the champions. Former pro cyclist Mohd Hafidz Abd Hamid emerged victorious in the Men’s category in a thrilling neck-and-neck finish. Alicia Brittain from South Africa successfully defended her title in the Women’s category.

Both champions shared their experiences, reflecting on the challenges and the joy of crossing the finish line. Mohd Hafidz described his unexpected win as a stroke of luck and perseverance, while Alicia praised the safe race, enjoyable course, and the supportive atmosphere among competitors.
The event also offered participants the chance to win exciting prizes, including a Specialized Roubaix SL8 bicycle valued at RM27,000, through a lucky draw.
