KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia Athletics has announced that the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon (KLSCM) will serve as the official preliminary selection event for the national marathon squad ahead of the 2027 SEA Games.
The national governing body for athletics formalized the partnership through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed with Dirigo Events, the rights holder and organizer of the marathon, at Wisma OCM. The agreement was executed by Malaysia Athletics Deputy President Dato’ Wan Hisham Wan Salleh and Dirigo Events Director Rainer Biemans, with National Sports Council Athlete Division Director Zaim Yusof and Malaysia Athletics Vice President Prof Dr Mohamed Rusli bin Abdullah present as witnesses.
Athlete-First Development Framework
The early designation of a selection pathway forms part of a restructured approach by Malaysia Athletics to extend preparation timelines and provide performance clarity for national distance runners. The initiative aims to identify emerging distance running talent while establishing long-term training milestones ahead of the regional multi-sport showpiece, which Malaysia is scheduled to host in 2027.

The technical scope of the agreement covers comprehensive athlete support frameworks, granting selected runners access to high-performance facilities and sports science services managed under the National Sports Institute. The multi-year collaboration between the governing body and the event organizer will also introduce structured coaching programs and coordinated regional and international race exposure to systematically build competitive depth.
Elite Label Benchmark and Technical Details
The selection platform utilizes the only road race in Malaysia currently carrying a World Athletics Elite Label. The upcoming 2026 iteration of the marathon is scheduled to take place on October 3 and 4, drawing domestic competitors alongside international participants from over 70 countries, including regional distance runners from across Southeast Asia.
