KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysian Athletics (MA) has officially announced details for the SEA Games 2027 Marathon Qualification Event, setting a dedicated national trial scheduled for early April 2027. Organized in strategic partnership with race organizer Dirigo Events, the standalone qualification race will determine the final two male and two female marathoners selected to represent Malaysia on home soil when the country hosts the 34th SEA Games in late September 2027.
The announcement was delivered during an athlete briefing led by Dato’ Wan Hisham Wan Salleh, Acting President of Malaysian Athletics, who commended the top national performers from the recently concluded Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon (KLSCM) 2026.
Qualification Pathways and Eligibility Criteria
The organizing committee has established a maximum field cap of 20 male and 20 female athletes for the April 2027 trial. Eligibility for the qualification race is structured across three distinct pathways:
- KLSCM 2026 Top 5 Finishers: The top five Malaysian male and female finishers from the 2026 edition automatically qualify for entry. This group is led by domestic champions Yeow Ni Jia—who set a new KLSCM Malaysian course record of 2:33:52—and marathon debutante Esther Joy Chen Hong Li, who took the women’s title in 3:05:22.
- KLSCM 2025 Top 5 Finishers: The top five domestic finishers from the 2025 edition of KLSCM are granted direct entry into the qualification field.
- Time Standard Qualifiers: Any Malaysian runner who achieves the performance threshold during the official qualification window—set between April 1, 2026, and March 30, 2027—is eligible to enter. The qualifying benchmarks match the 5th-place finishing times from the 2025 SEA Games marathon: 2:39:04 for men and 2:59:25 for women. Race times must be set on a World Athletics (WA) certified and AIMS-measured course globally.
High-Performance Support Package for 2026 Top Finishers
To ensure elite preparation ahead of the trial, Malaysian Athletics will provide a comprehensive athletic support package specifically to the Top 5 domestic finishers from KLSCM 2026.

The high-performance resources made available include:
- National Sports Institute (ISN) Access: Full access to weight rooms, sports physiotherapy, and specialized recovery infrastructure at Bukit Jalil.
- Alternative Rehabilitation: Designated sports therapy and rehab services via Dynamique Sports Rehab Centre.
- International Race Registration & Allowances: Assistance from MA to facilitate entries—and potential funding allowances—for international warm-up competitions ahead of the trial.
- Technical Coaching Oversight: Structured training schedule reviews and personalized guidance from Coach Azhar.
Putrajaya Route, Joint Public Mass Event, and Governance
The trial is planned to take place in Putrajaya during the first half of April 2027. Organizers intend for the trial route to mirror the proposed official marathon course for the SEA Games 2027, granting national contenders early exposure to course elevation, surface conditions, and environmental factors.
Additionally, the committee plans to host an open mass-participation public run on the same day following the completion of the trial. This hybrid event design aims to allow local spectators to cheer on elite contenders before taking to the course themselves.
The SEA Games 2027 Marathon Organizing Committee tasked with overseeing the qualification process and selecting final trial entries comprises:
- Datuk Wan Hisham Wan Salleh — Acting President, Malaysian Athletics (MA)
- Norhayati Karim — Secretary-General, Malaysian Athletics (MA)
- Rainer Biemans — Director, Dirigo Events
- Gloria Ng — Director, Dirigo Events
- Dr. Ong Kian-Ming — Independent Consultant & Adjunct Professor, Taylor’s University
- Representative — Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM)
Selection Protocol and Biennial Trial Structure
Following the April 2027 trial, the top two finishing men and top two finishing women will be formally submitted to the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) for inclusion in the official SEA Games 2027 delegation, with third-place finishers designated as official alternates. The OCM retains final ratifying authority over all national team selections.

Malaysian Athletics announced that it intends to adopt this trial format on a permanent, biennial basis aligned with the two-year SEA Games cycle. Modeled after established international selection systems—such as the USATF Olympic Marathon Trials—the event will serve as Malaysian Athletics’ flagship domestic road-racing property to elevate competitive distance running standards nationwide.
