Garmin Malaysia, a leader in GPS technology, has joined forces with Reef Check Malaysia, a non-profit dedicated to ocean health, in a new initiative to combat marine pollution. The partnership focuses on the removal of ghost nets, abandoned fishing gear that poses a serious threat to marine life.
Collaboration for a Cleaner Ocean
This collaboration highlights both organizations’ commitment to environmental conservation. Garmin Malaysia pledges to contribute RM100 for every kilogram of ghost nets collected from Malaysian waters, with a target of RM10,000 raised between March and September 2024.
“At Garmin, we’ve always been at the forefront of sustainability efforts and ocean conservation,” said Sheena Sim, Marketing Lead at Garmin Malaysia. “We’re excited to collaborate with Reef Check Malaysia to make a real difference for Malaysia’s marine ecosystems. Through initiatives like ghost net collection and eco-friendly wearables like the Garmin Descent G1 Solar – Ocean Edition, we aim to contribute to cleaner oceans for future generations.”

Reef Check Malaysia Takes the Lead
Reef Check Malaysia will lead the ghost net removal operations, leveraging their expertise and network of trained islanders to safely remove abandoned nets from underwater habitats around Johor islands.
“We are thankful for Garmin Malaysia’s support in protecting Malaysia’s marine biodiversity,” said Julian Hyde, Chief Executive Officer of Reef Check Malaysia. “Through this partnership, we aim to raise awareness about the impacts of marine pollution and inspire action towards a cleaner and healthier ocean.”
