Garmin Integrates Advanced Nutrition and Macro Tracking into Garmin Connect Ecosystem

KUALA LUMPUR — Garmin has officially expanded its digital health suite with the introduction of comprehensive nutrition tracking within the Garmin Connect app. Available as a premium enhancement for Garmin Connect+ subscribers, the new feature allows users to log food intake, monitor macronutrients, and receive AI-driven insights alongside their existing fitness and recovery data.

The move marks a significant shift in Garmin’s strategy, evolving the platform from a purely activity-based tracker into a holistic lifestyle assistant. By consolidating “burned” and “consumed” calories into a single interface, Garmin aims to help athletes and fitness enthusiasts understand the direct impact of nutrition on their training and overall well-being.

Streamlined Food Logging and AI Integration

The core of the new update is “Nutrition Tracking Made Easy,” which utilizes several modern technologies to lower the barrier to consistent logging. Users can now:

  • Utilize AI Image Recognition: By using a smartphone camera, the app can identify food items and estimate portions automatically.
  • Access a Global Database: The search function includes a vast library of packaged goods, restaurant menus, and regional food options.
  • Barcode Scanning: A built-in scanner allows for instant logging of grocery items by their UPC.

Beyond simple calorie counting, the update tracks macronutrients—proteins, fats, and carbohydrates—and provides personalized recommendations based on the user’s height, weight, activity level, and gender. These targets can be customized to support specific health goals, such as increasing protein intake for muscle recovery or managing carb loading before a race.

Active Intelligence: Connecting Food to Sleep and Recovery

The most sophisticated element of the new plan is Active Intelligence. Powered by AI, this feature analyzes how specific nutritional habits impact physiological metrics. For example, the app can identify patterns between late-night eating and a decrease in sleep quality or Body Battery™ recovery.

Whether they’re just starting to build healthy habits or looking to perform at their absolute best, users can now track their nutrition, health, and fitness data in one app,” said Mr. Scoppen Lin, Assistant General Manager, Garmin Asia.

Wrist-Based Integration and Voice Support

For users on the go, the nutrition feature extends to the wrist. On compatible Garmin smartwatches, riders and runners can view a quick overview of their daily progress and log “favorite” or “recent” foods directly from the device. Select voice-enabled smartwatches also support voice commands to open the Nutrition app, further simplifying the data entry process during a busy day.
