PHUKET — The paradise island of Phuket has completed a major sports tourism milestone, welcoming over 7,000 runners and international visitors from across the globe for the 20th anniversary celebration of the Laguna Phuket Marathon 2026 Presented by Supersports. The large-scale event, which took place over June 13 and 14 2026, served as a significant economic catalyst during the island’s off-peak green season, reinforcing Phuket’s established positioning as a top-tier international active sport destination.
The internationally sanctioned mass-participation race was held at the Laguna Grove venue within the award-winning Laguna Phuket integrated resort complex. By drawing thousands of competitive athletes, recreational joggers, family members, and support crews to the island during the traditional off-season travel months, the marathon delivered a direct, vital financial injection into the broader regional economy, benefiting hospitality operators, restaurants, transport providers, and independent local vendors.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand alongside Phuket provincial authorities have strategically utilized the long-standing athletic fixture to demonstrate that the island operates as a viable year-round travel destination. Tourism stakeholders emphasized that the regional green season, characterized by cooler tropical breezes and refreshing seasonal weather, offers an optimal climate backdrop for outdoor endurance sports and active wellness travel.
To elevate the overall participant experience, the 20th anniversary edition utilized a distinct Sunset-Sunrise race scheduling concept designed to split the distance categories across the most scenic hours of the weekend. This structural format allowed different demographics of runners to experience the island’s natural coastal paths and village routes under varying conditions.

The program opened with the Sunset Run sessions on Saturday June 13, which were structured specifically for families, lifestyle travelers, and short-distance runners. The evening block featured the 2km Junior Run, the 5km fun run, and the 10km beachside race. Participants navigated routes winding through local residential communities and quiet coastal roads, crossing the finish line during the evening twilight hours.
The athletic focus shifted early on Sunday June 14 for the high-endurance Sunrise Run categories. The half marathon covering 21.0975km and the full marathon covering 42.195km commenced in the pre-dawn hours to shield runners from intense tropical midday heat. The official routes guided the endurance fields past traditional rubber plantations, pineapple fields, and historic areas within the Thalang district, before looping along the shoreline settings of Nai Yang and Layan beaches as the morning sun broke over the Andaman Sea.

The 2026 anniversary iteration attracted a highly competitive international field representing more than 60 countries. The elite divisions witnessed a dominant performance by a formidable squad of elite distance runners from China making their official debut on the Phuket course. The Chinese elite contingent swept the top steps of the marquee full marathon divisions, with Zhipeng Huang capturing the men’s absolute title in an impressive time of 02:45:35, and Ling Wu securing the women’s crown with a commanding performance of 03:03:46.
Beyond elite athletic pursuits, the weekend highlighted an inclusive approach to community fitness, drawing participants across vast generational spans ranging from young children to inspiring senior citizens. In the 5km division, an 83-year-old local runner successfully completed the course, underscoring the accessibility of the event. The race village also drew a substantial lifestyle following, featuring prominent Thai celebrity fitness enthusiasts, digital media influencers, and international running clubs.

The event integrated a clear social responsibility framework alongside the physical competition. Through the specialized Running Club Affiliate Program, the event raised over 40,000 Baht via runner entry contributions. The collected proceeds were officially presented to the local Children First Fund, a welfare initiative that supplies essential nutritional support to more than 400 underprivileged children housed across various Phuket orphanages, ensuring that international tourism directly benefits the island’s vulnerable populations.
