Garmin Expands Running Ecosystem with Entry-Level Forerunner 70 and 170 Series

Garmin Malaysia has announced the upcoming release of the Forerunner 70 and Forerunner 170 series, expanding its lineup of dedicated GPS running smartwatches. Scheduled for local availability on May 29, 2026, the new models are engineered specifically as entry-level and intermediate options, integrating core metrics from higher-end performance models into more accessible interfaces for aspiring runners.

Both the Forerunner 70 and 170 feature a hardware update that includes a high-visibility 1.2-inch AMOLED display equipped with a responsive touchscreen. To ensure functionality during high-intensity training or adverse weather conditions, the devices retain a traditional mechanical five-button physical layout alongside the touch interface.

Technical Metrics and Training Customization

The core architecture of the Forerunner 70 focuses on establishing fundamental data tracking. The device utilizes built-in GPS alongside wrist-based sensors to log time, distance, pace, and real-time heart rate. Advanced metrics derived from the Garmin Human Performance Lab have also been integrated, providing users with training readiness scores, training status updates, wrist-based running power, and running dynamics without requiring external chest straps.

To accommodate beginners, the software introduces a simplified “quick workouts” feature. This allows users to generate tailored training sessions by inputs of desired duration and intensity. Furthermore, the updated Garmin Run Coach platform introduces adaptive plans that incorporate run-and-walk intervals alongside lower-volume training blocks, scaling dynamically based on individual recovery data.

Health tracking remains continuous, utilizing sensors to monitor heart rate variability (HRV) status, blood oxygen saturation (Pulse Ox), and multi-stage sleep tracking via an integrated sleep coach function. In smartwatch mode, the Forerunner 70 delivers a battery duty cycle of up to 13 days on a single charge.

Expanded Utility and Multimedia Integration

The Forerunner 170 series builds upon the fundamental tracking of the base model by introducing features aimed at everyday utility and independent operation. The hardware includes contactless payment capabilities via Garmin Pay, enabling transactions directly from the wrist through supported banking networks.

The specialized Forerunner 170 Music variant adds dedicated onboard storage. This allows users to download playlists, podcasts, and audio tracks directly from participating third-party streaming services, facilitating phone-free audio playback via wireless Bluetooth headphones during training sessions. Due to the additional power requirements of these features, the Forerunner 170 and 170 Music variants provide a battery duty cycle of up to 10 days in standard smartwatch mode.
