Ultramarathoner Natalie Dau Achieves Guinness World Record for Fastest Crossing of Peninsular Malaysia on Foot

Singapore, July 2, 2024 – Natalie Dau, a celebrated ultramarathoner from Singapore, has secured a Guinness World Records title for the “Fastest Crossing of Peninsular Malaysia on Foot.” The 52-year-old athlete completed the remarkable feat by running 720 kilometers in 8 days and 46 minutes, starting from the northern border of Malaysia in Kelantan and finishing at the Johor Bahru Customs Point.

The record-setting journey was part of Dau’s broader Project 1000, which began on May 25, 2024 in Hat Yai, Thailand, and saw her run 1000 kilometers over 12 days, averaging two marathons per day. Her route took her through Thailand and Malaysia, concluding in Singapore on June 5, 2024, coinciding with Global Running Day.

The Guinness World Records team confirmed Dau’s achievement after a thorough review of over 100 pieces of evidence, including GPS data, photo and video records, witness statements, and receipts. Dau also received recognition from the Singapore Book of Records for the “Fastest 1000 km Thailand-Singapore Ultramarathon.”

Dau’s journey was not without challenges. She endured extreme heat, physical injuries, exhaustion, hazardous road conditions, and even wild dog chases. Despite these adversities, she persevered, driven by the support of local communities and her mission to inspire others.

“Giving up was never an option,” said Dau. “So many people were supporting me and invested in this project, and I couldn’t let them down. The most beautiful thing was feeling the sense of unity and love from people in each of the communities we passed through.”

Project 1000 aims to raise awareness and funds for GRLS, a global charity under Women Win, dedicated to empowering underprivileged women and girls through sport and exercise. Dau hopes her achievement will inspire others to pursue their dreams and overcome societal expectations.

“I hope that people everywhere can feel that their dreams are important and are achievable, and won’t be held back by doubts or expectations of society and those around them,” Dau shared. “We are all capable of more than we realize, and we can do even more when we support one another.”
