Singapore-Based Ultramarathoner Natalie Dau Completes Record-Breaking 1,000km Charity Run

Singapore – Natalie Dau, a 10-time ultramarathon winner residing in Singapore, has achieved an incredible feat by completing her “Project 1000.” Over a grueling 12-day journey, Dau ran a staggering 1,000 kilometers, starting in Hat Yai, Thailand on May 25, 2024, and traversing the entire length of Malaysia before finishing triumphantly in Singapore on Global Running Day, June 5, 2024.

This self-supported run saw Dau cover a distance equivalent to roughly two marathons (approximately 84.4 km) per day. The final leg on June 5, 2024 involved local Singaporean runners joining Dau at various points, with hundreds showing their support and running alongside her to the finish line at The Westin Singapore. Hundreds more gathered to celebrate her historic accomplishment, including distinguished guests like MP Poh Li San and Mr. Ong Eng Huat from the Singapore Book of Records.

Dau’s remarkable achievement was officially recognized at the finish line. The Singapore Book of Records awarded her the title for “Fastest 1000 km Thailand-Singapore Ultramarathon,” and her application for the Guinness World Record title for “Fastest Crossing of Peninsular Malaysia on Foot” is pending certification.

The 12-day journey tested Dau’s limits. Brutal heat, minimal sleep (just a few hours each night), dangerous road conditions, and even encounters with wild dogs were just some of the obstacles she faced. Starting runs as early as midnight to take advantage of cooler temperatures, Dau even battled through a hip injury and a urinary tract infection. Despite these challenges, her determination never wavered.

“This project was about so much more than just running,” Dau said. “It was about community, teamwork, and perseverance. So many people believed in me, and I couldn’t let them down. Giving up was never an option.”

Project 1000 wasn’t just about pushing physical boundaries. As she ran through towns and villages in Thailand and Malaysia, Dau was touched by the kindness of strangers offering water and words of encouragement. She also visited Hat Yai University and schools, inspiring young people to believe in themselves and chase their dreams.

Project 1000 serves a cause close to Dau’s heart: empowering underprivileged women and girls. The project aims to raise awareness about the gender gap in exercise and the importance of physical activity for mental and overall well-being. Donations raised through Project 1000 will be directed towards GRLS, a global charity focused on empowering women and girls around the world through sports and exercise, which is part of the Women Win initiative. At 52 years old, Dau hopes her incredible feat will inspire others to dream bigger, overcome self-doubt, and defy societal expectations. “It doesn’t matter what your goal is,” she shared, “everyone can achieve something great. Believe in yourself and go for it!
