Phuket, Thailand – New Zealand’s Olympic silver medalist, Hayden Wilde, showcased his athletic prowess by claiming victory at the 30th Laguna Phuket Triathlon on November 17, 2024. In the women’s division, the United Kingdom’s Kate Waugh successfully defended her championship title, while Thailand’s Thanadon Wisarutsin earned his second consecutive national championship title.

This iconic triathlon, Southeast Asia’s longest-running international event, attracted over 1,000 athletes from 30+ countries. Known for its challenging course and breathtaking views, the event solidified Phuket’s status as a premier destination for international sports.

The triathlon began at 6:30am on Bang Tao Beach, featuring a 1.8-kilometer swim, a 50-kilometer bike ride through Phuket’s hilly terrain, and a 12-kilometer run around Laguna Phuket. Wilde triumphed in his debut with an impressive 2:19:03 finish, followed by fellow Kiwi Tayler Reid (2:22:13) and Ukraine’s Rostyslav Pevtsov (2:23:03).

In the women’s category, Kate Waugh retained her title, finishing in 2:35:39, ahead of Switzerland’s Alanis Siffest (2:39:54) and the UK’s Sian Rainsley (2:43:41). Thailand’s 19-year-old Tanadon Witsarutsin clinched his second national title with a time of 2:56:56.

Wilde expressed his joy after conquering the challenging terrain and heat: “This event has been on my bucket list for a long time, and it did not disappoint. The scenery and atmosphere were incredible.”

Waugh also celebrated her achievement: “I’m thrilled to defend my title at such a prestigious event. Racing here is always a privilege, and the course is extraordinary.”

The triathlon’s 30th anniversary highlighted its status as a global sporting phenomenon. With support from organizations like the Tourism Authority of Thailand and Thai Airways, the event continues to thrive.
