KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – ASICS has reaffirmed its dedication to grassroots sports development through its sponsorship of the ASICS MASISWA Badminton Championship 2025 and the ASICS Badminton University Cup 2025. These tournaments, held consecutively at Taylor’s University Grand Hall in Subang Jaya, aimed to provide a competitive platform for student-athletes while promoting the broader benefits of physical activity.
The ASICS MASISWA Badminton Championship 2025 took place from June 26 to 28, attracting over 350 students from 15 private higher education institutions (IPTS) across Malaysia. Competitors participated in singles and doubles events, categorized into the MASISWA Open and Bakat Baru (Beginner) divisions. Following this, the ASICS Badminton University Cup 2025, in its second edition, ran from June 28 to 30, with over 25 teams representing 15 universities nationwide. In a notable match-up, HELP University emerged victorious over last year’s champion, UCSI University, with HELP University’s team led by captain Poopathi Velayutham.

Both tournaments, recognized by Majlis Sukan IPTS Malaysia (MASISWA), were designed to reflect ASICS’s commitment to developing well-rounded individuals. The brand emphasizes that these championships created opportunities for student-athletes to enhance their skills and character, reinforcing the belief that movement contributes not just to victory but also to overall well-being. The platforms provided by these tournaments aimed to showcase student abilities within a framework of healthy competition, resilience, and camaraderie.

Boon Tib Soon Nik, Country Manager of ASICS Malaysia, commented on the brand’s support for young Malaysian athletes. He stated that these young athletes represent the future of Malaysian sports. By investing in such platforms, ASICS aims to foster athletic growth while simultaneously encouraging healthier minds, stronger bodies, and more resilient communities.
A significant highlight of the tournaments was the Women’s Singles victory by Loh Zhi Wei from the University of Wollongong Malaysia (UOWM). Loh Zhi Wei, currently ranked World No. 133, not only secured the title but also marked UOWM’s first-ever championship win at the ASICS MASISWA tournament.

HELP University demonstrated a strong overall performance, securing the overall champion title for both the ASICS MASISWA Badminton Championship 2025 and the ASICS Badminton University Cup 2025. Their medal haul included 4 Gold, 2 Silver, and 1 Bronze. HELP University’s dominant squad featured a mix of current and former national players, including Clarissa San Yee Wen, Ho Lo Ee, Gan Min Yee, Vannee Gobi, Low Eu Cong, and Poopathi Velayutham, supported by teammates Brandon Hee Hek Yong and Goh Yang Hong.

Winners across all divisions received cash prizes from a combined pool of RM6,750, along with exclusive ASICS products and medals. These prizes were distributed across both the MASISWA Open and Bakat Baru divisions, reinforcing ASICS’s stated commitment to supporting the ongoing development of young athletes. The tournaments underscore the importance of university-level sports in nurturing talent and promoting a balanced approach to athletic and personal growth.
