New Zealand Invites Active Escapes: Focus on World-Class Running, Cycling, and Hiking

Tourism New Zealand has issued an invitation for travellers from the region to engage with its vast natural landscapes through a range of active pursuits, positioning the country as a premier destination for running, cycling, hiking, and walking adventures. The focus, branded as “Active Escapes,” aligns with a reported global trend where travellers prioritize wellness and active experiences in their journeys.

New Zealand, or Aotearoa, provides extensive infrastructure for these activities, encompassing over 1,555 official walking and hiking tracks, 11 iconic Great Walks, and 23 recognized Great Rides (the official cycle trail network). These routes traverse diverse geographical features, including alpine peaks, volcanic valleys, ancient forests, and wild coastlines.

World-Class Races Anchor Running Calendar

The country’s calendar of running events is a key component of the Active Escapes offering, attracting athletes of all levels from around the world. These events are positioned not only as competitive races but as unique destination experiences.

Beyond the physical activity, the appeal of a New Zealand Active Escape is tied to the opportunity for recovery and cultural connection. The campaign emphasizes that the active journey is complemented by restorative activities such as soaking in geothermal hot pools, stargazing under the world’s largest Dark Sky Reserve, engaging with Māori cultural experiences, and exploring local cuisine and wineries, which balance the effort spent on the trails.
