Garmin Redefines Cycling Safety with the Launch of Varia RearVue 820 Radar Tail Light

KUALA LUMPUR – Garmin Malaysia has officially unveiled the Varia™ RearVue 820, marking a new era in situational awareness for the nation’s growing cycling community. As the brand’s most powerful and innovative radar tail light to date, the RearVue 820 introduces advanced vehicle tracking and intelligence features designed to bridge the safety gap between cyclists and motorists on increasingly busy roads.

The device is not merely a light; it is a high-precision sensor that acts as a second set of eyes, detecting approaching vehicles from over 170 metres (up to 175 metres) away with a wider field of view than any previous model.

Intelligence Behind the Radar

The standout innovation of the RearVue 820 is its Advanced Vehicle Tracking capabilities. When paired with a compatible Edge® cycling computer or the Varia smartphone app, the device does more than just beep. It now classifies approaching threats by size (small, medium, or large) and tracks side-to-side movement.

By categorizing threat levels based on a vehicle’s speed and path of travel, the RearVue 820 provides cyclists with real-time data to help them distinguish between a standard pass and a high-risk lane change. This level of granularity allows riders to make split-second decisions with significantly more confidence.

We’re excited to expand our trusted cycling radar technology with Varia RearVue 820,” said Mr. Scoppen Lin, Assistant General Manager of Garmin Asia. “Whether cyclists are commuting to work or training along busy streets, this radar helps them stay more conscious of nearby traffic through innovative tracking alerts, while the brilliant tail light ensures they remain highly visible.

Seeing and Being Seen

Visibility remains at the core of the Varia mission. The RearVue 820 is Garmin’s brightest tail light yet, visible from over 2 kilometres away. It offers four primary light modes—Day Flash, Night Flash, Solid, and Peloton—and introduces Custom Light Patterns that can be configured directly through the Varia app.

Safety is further enhanced by an integrated Brake Light function. Utilizing an internal accelerometer, the device detects when a rider is slowing down or stopping, immediately triggering a unique, high-intensity flashing pattern to alert trailing motorists and fellow cyclists.

Built for the Modern Rider

Garmin has listened to the community by modernizing the hardware of the RearVue 820. The unit features a USB-C charging port and a redesigned seat post mount that offers a cleaner, more secure fit for various road and gravel frame geometries.

Crucially, the 820 introduces Same-Speed Tracking. This feature eliminates a common blind spot in radar technology by maintaining a visual lock on vehicles (or other cyclists) that are following at a matched speed or waiting for an opportunity to pass. For those using select Garmin smartwatches, the system even supports voice alerts via the Garmin Public Beta program, adding an auditory layer of safety to the wrist-based haptic vibrations.

Despite the added processing power, battery life remains superior. Cyclists can expect up to 24 hours in Day Flash mode and a massive 30 hours in Radar-Only mode, making it a reliable companion for everything from urban commutes to multi-day endurance events.
