Andre Agassi and World Number 1 Ben Johns Set Global Record at Merdeka 118 During JOOLA Titans Tour 2026

Pickleball has officially reached new heights in Malaysia, both literally and figuratively. The JOOLA Titans Tour 2026 concluded its Kuala Lumpur leg with a historic achievement that has put the country on the map of the global sporting world. In a breathtaking display of skill and spectacle, tennis legend Andre Agassi and the world’s top-ranked pickleball player, Ben Johns, headlined a match at the summit of Merdeka 118, securing an official Guinness World Record.

The match, played at Level 118 of the world’s second-tallest building, has been recognized as the highest pickleball match ever recorded in a building. This milestone serves as a powerful statement for the sport’s rapid growth in Malaysia and its transition from a recreational pastime to a world-class competitive event.

A Historic Showcase Above the Clouds

The defining moment of the tour took place against the backdrop of the Kuala Lumpur skyline. Team Agassi and Team Ben Johns faced off in a specially curated showcase that featured a mix of global icons and rising talents from the Asia-Pacific region. The format was designed for high-intensity spectacle, featuring women’s, men’s, and mixed doubles encounters.

The showcase reached its peak with a “Dreambreaker” finale. In this format, players rotated rapidly in a race to 18 points, providing a dramatic and unpredictable finish that kept the energy high until the final rally. As the sun set, the celebration was amplified by a synchronized display of lights, drones, and pyrotechnics that transformed Merdeka 118 into a beacon for the sport.

This event was held in collaboration with Tourism Malaysia in support of the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign. By utilizing such an iconic landmark, the organizers successfully highlighted Malaysia’s world-class infrastructure and its readiness to host globally significant sporting experiences.

Community Spirit at Stadium Juara

While the record-breaking match at Merdeka 118 captured global headlines, the heart of the community engagement happened at Stadium Juara. Over the two-day event, approximately 2,000 spectators gathered to witness professional exhibition matches and participate in a festival-style atmosphere.

The stadium event focused heavily on fan engagement. Interactive “hit-for-a-prize” challenges allowed local fans to step onto the court, with stars like Andre Agassi and Brooke Buckner even participating in the challenges themselves. This accessibility is a hallmark of pickleball, a sport known for its low barrier to entry and inclusive nature.

BROOKS GLYCERIN FLEX

One of the most memorable segments was the “Celebrities and Pros” match, which bridged the gap between different sporting eras and disciplines. Malaysian sporting legends Datuk Nicol David, the nine-time World Squash Champion, and Dato’ Mirnawan Nawawi, former national hockey captain, traded their traditional gear for pickleball paddles. Their appearance drew some of the loudest cheers of the night, celebrating a unique crossover between Malaysian sporting heritage and the modern rise of pickleball.

Growing the Sport from the Ground Up

Beyond the lights and the records, the JOOLA Titans Tour emphasized long-term growth for the sport in Malaysia. On 8 April, the professional players engaged directly with local communities across the Klang Valley. Through coaching sessions and grassroots activations, the tour aimed to inspire the next generation of Malaysian pickleball players.

Tom Nguyen, CEO of JOOLA APAC, noted that the response in Kuala Lumpur was extraordinary, reflecting the immense potential of pickleball as a major sporting and cultural platform in Asia. The success of the event was made possible through a collective effort from local distributors and partners, including Perfect Sports, Dinkit Pickleball Courts, and Tomaz Pickleball Club.
