Colorectal Cancer on the Rise in Malaysia: Fun Run Aims to Raise Awareness

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Colorectal cancer has become the most common cancer among Malaysian men and the second most common among women, with a worrying trend of increasing cases in younger adults. To address this critical issue, the Malaysian Society of Colorectal Surgeons (MSCRS) is organizing its inaugural Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign on July 7, 2024.

Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign

The campaign highlights the importance of early detection through a fun run with 4KM and 7KM options. Public education is a key focus, aiming to increase awareness of colorectal cancer symptoms and the availability of screening methods.

“Late-stage diagnosis significantly reduces survival rates,” said Dr. Nurhashim Haron, the campaign’s Organizing Chairman. “We want to empower the public to seek medical advice upon experiencing symptoms like blood in stools, bowel habit changes, or unexplained weight loss.”

Dr. Nurhashim emphasizes that early colorectal cancer often presents without symptoms, making screening crucial. Screening options include stool or blood tests readily available at general practitioners, government clinics, and hospitals.

The campaign strives to educate the public on preventive measures and early detection methods. The event, held at Eco Ardence, Shah Alam, will be officiated by the Health Minister, YB Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad.
