Phuket’s Legendary Laguna Phuket Triathlon Returns for 30th Anniversary

Phuket, Thailand – The Laguna Phuket Triathlon, known as the “Race of Legends,” is back for its 30th edition. This prestigious event will take place on November 16-17, 2024, at Laguna Grove, Phuket.

The triathlon boasts a world-class competition set against a breathtaking tropical backdrop. This year’s event features a new and more challenging course, designed to attract seasoned athletes and enthusiasts alike. The race is expected to draw over 1,000 participants from around the globe, adding to the excitement of Phuket’s peak tourist season.

Celebrating Three Decades of Excellence

Laguna Phuket Triathlon has become a staple in the triathlon world. “Reaching the 30th anniversary is a remarkable achievement,” said Mr. Paul Wilson, Vice President and Deputy Managing Director of Laguna Phuket. “We are incredibly proud of the legacy this event has built.”

A Race for Everyone

The triathlon offers various categories to cater to different skill levels. Participants can choose from:

  • Triathlon (Elite, Individual, and Team Relay)
  • Sprint Triathlon
  • Duathlon
  • Laguna Phuket Open Water Swim (new this year)
Laguna Phuket Triathlon

The Triathlon (Elite, Individual, and Team Relay) features signature race distances of a 1.8 km swim in the Andaman Sea and lagoon, a 50 km bike ride through Phuket’s picturesque countryside and villages, and a 12 km run within Laguna Phuket. For a different level of excitement, the Sprint Triathlon features a 0.5 km swim, 20 km bike, and 6 km run and the Duathlon covers a 4 km run – 50 km bike – 12 km run, allowing athletes to experience the race’s signature bike course. This triathlon boasts a generous prize pool totalling $20,000.

The popular Charity Fun Run also returns, offering a 6 Km run for the community to enjoy on November 16, 2024.

The Laguna Phuket Triathlon remains committed to environmental responsibility. The event will implement eco-friendly practices to minimize its environmental impact.

Star-Studded Lineup

The 30th Laguna Phuket Triathlon will feature a lineup of world-class triathletes, including two legends: Simon Thompson, who won in 2003 and placed 2nd in 2004, and Yvonne Van Vlerken, who placed 3rd in the female championship in 2017.

The event will also feature 12 pro male athletes: Richard Varga, Charlie Quin, Joel Wooldridge, Gaetan Fetaud, Max Stapley, Tom Bishop, Tayler Ried, Jonas Schomburg, Per Van Vlerken, Antony Costes, Guy Crawford, and Massimo Cigana. On the women’s side, 7 pro female athletes will compete: Kate Bevilaqua, Kate Waugh, Sian Rainsley, Nicole Van Der Kaay, Milan Agnew, Cassie Heaslip, and Dimity Lee Duke.

New Additions to the Event

In addition to the main triathlon races, the event will feature several new additions:

  • Laguna Phuket Open Water Swim Presented by TriHub: This new event is a challenging open water swim for both seasoned triathletes and first-time swimmers.
  • Sprint Triathlon award categories: These new categories will add an extra layer of excitement to the race for competitive triathletes.

A Weekend of Fun and Fitness

The Laguna Phuket Triathlon is more than just a race. It’s a weekend-long event filled with activities for the whole family. In addition to the triathlon races, there will be a Charity Fun Run, live music, food, and drinks.
