Langkawi, Malaysia – The scenic island of Langkawi, renowned as the “Jewel of Kedah,” witnessed a spectacular sporting event on Saturday as IRONMAN Malaysia 2024 made a triumphant return. The much-anticipated triathlon drew over 1,800 athletes from 51 countries, all braving the rigorous course in a testament to human endurance, the global appeal of the IRONMAN series, and the powerful combination of athleticism and scenic beauty that Langkawi offers.
This year’s event was nothing short of extraordinary, as the professional category saw two remarkable athletes take the top podium spots, while local heroes, volunteers, and young athletes made this more than just a competition. IRONMAN Malaysia 2024 was a celebration of community spirit, international camaraderie, and Langkawi’s growing prominence as a hub for sports tourism.

Pro Champions Emerge Victorious
The day was defined by standout performances, with Brazil’s Fernando Toldi and Australia’s Regan Hollioake emerging victorious in the men’s and women’s professional categories, respectively.
Fernando Toldi, a seasoned triathlete from Brazil, dominated the challenging 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride, and 42.2km run. Battling the tropical heat and humidity, Toldi finished with an impressive time of 8 hours, 10 minutes, and 23 seconds, marking his debut victory in Malaysia. “The course was tough, but the atmosphere and the support from everyone here really made it special. It’s my first time racing in Malaysia, and to win here is a huge honor,” said Toldi after crossing the finish line.
In the women’s race, Regan Hollioake stole the spotlight with an equally powerful performance. Despite being a rookie professional, Hollioake has had an exceptional season, and today’s victory further cemented her reputation as a rising star. She completed the race in 9 hours, 13 minutes, and 7 seconds, finishing a significant 17 minutes ahead of her closest rival. “It’s been an unbelievable season, and to win here in Langkawi is the perfect way to cap it off. The course was challenging, but the support was incredible, and the scenery was just breathtaking,” Hollioake reflected after her win.

A Race Beyond the Finish Line
While the professional athletes took center stage, IRONMAN Malaysia was about much more than the competition. The event served as a celebration of human endurance and a showcase of Langkawi’s beauty, providing athletes and spectators with a unique blend of sportsmanship and culture.
For many participants, simply crossing the finish line was the ultimate goal, and the sense of achievement was palpable among athletes of all levels. From the elite professionals to the dedicated age-group athletes, each participant embodied the spirit of perseverance that defines the IRONMAN journey.

Qualifying for the Big Leagues
This year’s IRONMAN Malaysia also served as a critical qualifying event for the upcoming world championships. Athletes competed fiercely for a total of 150 Age-Group qualifying slots, divided between two major international races.
- 45 slots were up for grabs for the 2025 VinFast IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, which will be held in Marbella, Spain.
- 105 slots were available for the prestigious 2025 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship, with the women’s race to be held in Kona, Hawaii, and the men’s race in Nice, France.
The opportunity to compete on the world stage added an extra layer of intensity to the race, pushing athletes to their limits as they vied for a coveted spot in these prestigious events.

Celebrating Inclusivity
One of the defining features of IRONMAN Malaysia 2024 was its commitment to inclusivity and community engagement. The event wasn’t just about the professional athletes or the age-group competitors; it also included a range of side competitions and activities designed to foster participation at all levels.
IRONKIDS Langkawi was a major highlight, giving over 300 young athletes the chance to experience the excitement of competitive sports. The energy and enthusiasm of the young participants were infectious, and many spectators commented on the importance of events like these in inspiring the next generation of athletes.
In addition to IRONKIDS, the event also featured an Aquathlon and a Community Run, both of which were open to athletes of all ages and abilities. These side events attracted a diverse group of participants, from seasoned athletes looking for a fun challenge to first-timers experiencing the thrill of competition.
The support from the local community was immense, with 1,100 volunteers stepping forward to assist with everything from logistics to cheering on the athletes. Their involvement was a testament to the strong community spirit that exists in Langkawi and the deep connection between the island’s residents and the event.

A Catalyst for Tourism
Beyond the race itself, IRONMAN Malaysia 2024 proved to be a significant boost for the local economy. The influx of athletes, along with their families, friends, and supporters, brought a wave of tourism to Langkawi. Hotels were fully booked, restaurants saw a surge in customers, and local businesses thrived during the event.
The impact on Langkawi’s tourism sector was evident, with many visitors taking the opportunity to explore the island’s natural beauty and cultural attractions before and after the race. This symbiotic relationship between sports tourism and the local economy is something that the organizers and local authorities are keen to build on for future editions of the event.
