UCI Grants Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) ProSeries Status for Three More Years

KUALA LUMPUR – The Vice President of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), Datuk Amarjit Singh Gill, today announced that the UCI has approved the continuation of the Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) with ProSeries status for an additional three years, spanning from 2026 to 2028.

Datuk Amarjit hailed the decision as a major achievement for Malaysia, which continues to be recognised as one of the best organisers on the global cycling calendar.

This is a massive victory for Malaysia. It is tangible proof that the UCI has full confidence in our nation’s capability to organise Le Tour de Langkawi efficiently, professionally, and without any issues,” said Datuk Amarjit Singh Gill, who is also the President of the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF), in an official statement released by the federation.

Importance to Asian Cycling

Datuk Amarjit revealed that he held direct discussions with UCI President, David Lappartient, emphasising the importance of LTdL as a premier race in the Asian continent and the necessity of ensuring its continuity with ProSeries status.

I stressed to the UCI President that LTdL is not just an ordinary race—it is a symbol of the development and progress of cycling in Asia. I am delighted that he fully agreed and offered strong support for the race to remain on the UCI ProSeries calendar for the next three years,” explained Amarjit, who also serves as the President of the Asian Cycling Confederation.

This decision has now been officially published in the UCI calendar, marking the guaranteed continuation of the prestigious race until 2028.

The UCI’s approval brings good news to all stakeholders in the country, particularly the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), the National Sports Council (NSC), and the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF).

Excellent 2025 Edition Paves the Way

Datuk Amarjit attributed the successful re-approval to the outstanding quality of the recently concluded LTdL 2025.

Immediately after the end of Le Tour de Langkawi 2025, many journalists surrounded me and asked if the UCI would renew the organisation rights for Le Tour de Langkawi to Malaysia. At that time, I refused to give any comments because I wanted to ensure the decision was in our hands before making any statements,” he noted.

And with the UCI decision I received late last night, I regard this as a great success. It also proves the UCI trusts Malaysia as a highly efficient and problem-free organiser of Le Tour de Langkawi,” he added.

The LTdL 2025, which concluded on October 5, was considered one of the best road cycling races ever organised by Malaysia, with the overall technical and race aspects receiving an “all green” rating from the race director, president, and the commissaires panel. This development confirms that no significant weaknesses were detected throughout the championship, and that LTdL remains a prestigious international event.

Questions Remain Over 2026 Organiser

Despite the excellent news of the UCI’s three-year extension, questions still surround the organisation status for the upcoming years.

It remains unconfirmed who will be responsible for organising the Le Tour de Langkawi 2026 (LTdL 2026). The National Sports Council (NSC) has served as the organiser for the three years from 2023 to 2025. NSC Director, Jefri Ngadirin, was recently reported as stating that any decision regarding the organisation rights would be made by the Cabinet after the NSC presents its full report on the recent race.
