October 2024 – Garmin Malaysia has introduced significant updates to its Garmin Coach platform and select smartwatch and cycling computer models, catering to both runners and cyclists. The enhanced training plans and added device features aim to help athletes of all levels meet their fitness goals, prepare for events, and improve their overall performance.
Personalized Training with Garmin Coach
One of the most notable updates is the expansion of Garmin Coach to include personalized training plans for cyclists, in addition to the existing ones for runners. This free feature is available through the Garmin Connect app, making it easy for users to set up tailored workouts based on their individual fitness goals. Whether you’re training for a marathon or preparing for a cycling event, the app helps guide your progress by offering daily workout recommendations.
Setting up a plan is straightforward. Users simply select their event date and the desired distance in the Garmin Connect app. From there, Garmin Coach takes over, creating daily workouts customized to the individual’s goals. The app also provides an overview of the training plan and a weekly workout schedule to keep users on track. What’s more, the plans are adaptive, adjusting based on the user’s performance, recovery, and health metrics.
Tailored Guidance for Runners and Cyclists
For runners, the Garmin Run Coach offers a more dynamic experience by delivering personalized workouts that adjust in real-time. For instance, if a runner excels in one session or needs to slow down due to unfavorable weather or fatigue, the plan modifies accordingly. Users can still choose from the existing Garmin Run coaches available in the Garmin Coach system.
On the cycling side, the Garmin Cycling Coach introduces training plans that adapt to a cyclist’s current performance levels and recovery status. In addition to personalized workouts, the cycling plans also provide insights into how the athlete’s capabilities stack up against the demands of upcoming rides. This includes information on elevation gain, distance, and terrain challenges. Prebuilt cycling plans are also available, catering to cyclists of all skill levels.
New Features for Garmin Devices
In tandem with the Garmin Coach update, Garmin has rolled out several feature enhancements for a range of its smartwatch and cycling computer models, including the epix (Gen 2), fēnix 7, Forerunner, vívoactive 5, and Venu 3 Series smartwatches, as well as the Edge 540, Edge 840, and Edge 1040 Series cycling computers.
Among the key features is Garmin Share, which allows users to quickly and easily share saved locations, courses, and workouts with nearby compatible Garmin smartwatches and Edge cycling computers. This feature promotes connectivity and convenience during training sessions.
Additionally, enhancements to race time predictions provide more refined estimates by considering fitness level, training history, and recent performances. This tool is particularly helpful for athletes training for specific events, allowing them to better gauge how their progress will translate into race-day success.
Advanced Cycling Features
Cyclists using Garmin’s Edge cycling computers will benefit from several new safety and performance features. For instance, the road hazards feature alerts riders to obstacles such as potholes or fallen trees reported by other cyclists, helping to ensure a safer ride. Cyclists can also contribute hazard data to alert others.
For those who enjoy group rides, GroupRide enhancements improve in-ride communication with live location sharing, incident detection alerts, and messaging. This ensures that everyone stays connected and can assist fellow riders if needed. Moreover, cyclists can add a competitive edge to their rides with in-ride leaderboards for climbs and post-ride awards.
