KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Garmin has announced the release of the quatix 8, a new smartwatch model specifically developed for marine use. The device is positioned as a tool for individuals engaged in boating, sailing, and fishing activities, as well as for daily wear. It features a new built-in speaker and microphone, designed to facilitate helm control and communication while on the water.
The quatix 8 will be available in two size options: 47mm and 51mm. Both versions incorporate a 1.4-inch AMOLED display, protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire lens and framed by a titanium bezel. New leakproof buttons and a sensor guard have been integrated into the design to enhance the watch’s resistance to environmental elements. Battery life for the 47mm model is stated to be up to 16 days, while the 51mm model offers up to 29 days in smartwatch mode.

Mr. Scoppen Lin, Assistant General Manager for Garmin Asia, commented on the quatix 8’s features. He noted that the watch is equipped with capabilities to support maritime activities, providing control and awareness for users. He also mentioned the inclusion of wellness and fitness tracking features for use off the water.
Durable Design and Environmental Resistance
The quatix 8 has been constructed with durability as a key focus, intended to withstand demanding conditions. According to Garmin, the watch has undergone testing to U.S. military standards for thermal and shock resistance. It includes a new ambient light sensor, which aims to ensure screen readability even in bright sunlight. A built-in LED flashlight is also included, offering multiple light modes and a red safety light to assist with night vision.

For activities involving submersion, the quatix 8 is dive-rated up to 40 meters. New leakproof metal buttons and a sensor guard are incorporated to protect essential sensors during scuba and apnea diving activities.
On-the-Water Functionality
A core aspect of the quatix 8 is its dedicated marine features. With its built-in speaker and microphone, the smartwatch allows for voice command capabilities when connected to compatible Garmin chartplotters via Bluetooth. This enables users to navigate, add waypoints for fishing spots, and control other chartplotter functions directly from their wrist. When paired with a compatible smartphone, the device also supports making and receiving calls and using the phone’s voice assistant for responding to text messages.

The quatix 8 can function as a remote control for compatible Garmin trolling motors and Fusion entertainment systems. It also provides real-time updates on marine conditions, including water depth, speed, heading, and wind. Preloaded boating and sailing applications are included, designed to assist users with alerts for tide changes and anchor drag, tack assist, race start guidance, and a regatta timer. These features aim to enhance situational awareness and timing for various water-based activities.
